County's appeals cut property taxes by $8 million

Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Mark Roosevelt never asked for a cut in his property taxes, but Allegheny County sought one for him -- along with 8,700 other property owners.
As in many of those cases, the county acted on Roosevelt's property assessment even when the homeowner did not.

Onorato warns he's ready for assessment fight

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato issued a warning to school districts and municipalities Friday: Stop appealing property assessments.
"You're not going to win, and we're going to take you on if you try to do it," Onorato said. "You keep trying and we're going to keep fighting you."

County trying to save homes

With mortgage defaults bruising cities across the nation and home losses continuing to mount in Western Pennsylvania, community leaders throughout Allegheny County kicked off a campaign yesterday to try to help homeowners in crisis.
The unprecedented local effort to save homes in the greater Pittsburgh area came one day after the federal government seized control of the mighty mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in its latest effort to help reverse a housing and credit crisis that has consistently worsening more than a year after the trouble started.

Onorato pushes revival of direct flights to Europe

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato met with Sen. Bob Casey in Washington, late Monday in local government's latest attempt to restore flights to Europe and elsewhere in the wake of US Airways latest cutbacks.
Onorato said yesterday he planned to ask Casey whether the federal government can help improve Pittsburgh International Airport's position as a major airport as the airline industry struggles with high fuel prices and other problems.
