DeSantis gains nod from GOP for mayor

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl will have to face a Republican challenger in November, but Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato will be unopposed, according to an unofficial count of write-in votes completed yesterday.

Yesterday's Democratic primary election was focused on one thing - Pittsburgh's bright hopes for the future.
Both Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato spoke on this theme in their victory speeches to a crowd of supporters last night at the IBEW Hall on the Southside. Ravenstahl ran unopposed, and Onorato, the incumbent, trounced Rick Swartz last night for Allegheny County Chief Executive.

Dan Onorato coasted to an easy re-nomination for county chief executive last night.
Mr. Onorato, 46, of the North Side, defeated Rick Swartz, 54, of Friendship. Mr. Swartz, executive director of the Bloomfield-Garfield Corp. ran a nearly unfunded campaign that didn't begin until the legal challenge to his nominating petitions was resolved in late March.

A lot of people (including this editorial board) were disappointed when it turned out that Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl would have no challenger in this year's Democratic primary. The situation is almost the same for the Allegheny County chief executive, where issues cry out for debate yet there is no Republican on the ballot and the Democratic contest next Tuesday is a mismatch.

And so, yesterday, when the temperature was 66 degrees, the sun was shining and there was a light breeze, one of the beneficiaries was Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato, who led about 40 county employees on a walk to Station Square to kick off a health program.
