Building coalitions in southwestern Pennsylvania has, and will continue to be, the key to advancing transportation and economic development.
That was the message delivered by Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato during the keynote address at during the Mon Valley Progress Council's 43rd annual dinner Thursday at the Willow Room in Rostraver Township.

Onorato touts regional bus system to MVPC

When Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato spoke at the Mon Valley Providers Council's 43rd Annual Dinner about the importance of finishing the Mon/Fayette Expressway to Pittsburgh, one could say he was preaching to the choir.
After all, most of the guests Thursday evening in Belle Vernon were government, business and civic leaders from river communities with a stake in an improved transportation link.

Allegheny County ranks first in the state in terms of tourism spending, but the lack of a headquarters hotel hampers efforts to attract the largest of gatherings, including national political conventions, VisitPittsburgh officials said yesterday.
Joseph McGrath, VisitPittsburgh president and chief executive officer, said Pittsburgh automatically takes itself out of the running for hosting a Democratic or Republican national convention by not having a headquarters hotel with at least 1,000 rooms near the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato was thinking regionally when he showed up at Heinz Field on Thursday to welcome Pittsburgh Raceway Park into the area's pro sports fraternity.
"Pittsburgh is noted for its black and gold colors on all of its teams. We don't have a black and gold race team, so we're going to declare that this is our fourth team," Onorato said at a press conference held in an area behind the football stadium's press box. "Today, the Pittsburgh Raceway Park will officially be declared the fourth black and gold team for the Pittsburgh Region. When we talk about Pittsburgh, it's not just the city proper, it's actually Southwestern Pennsylvania."

Onorato may have to face 'wild card'

HARRISBURG -- Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato is viewed by some here as the "front-runner" for governor in the 2010 Democratic primary, even though he says the race is an "eternity" away and he is undecided about running.
"I would call him the front-runner," Al Neri, editor of The Insider, a statewide newsletter, said after listening to Onorato address the Pennsylvania Press Club last week. Onorato has $2.3 million in campaign money, and Gov. Ed Rendell's top fundraisers are helping him, Neri said.
