Onorato lobbies for approval of slots bill to expedite arena

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato is pressing state legislators to approve a slots-related bill critical to the funding of a new arena before they recess for the summer.
Mr. Onorato has been talking to legislators about approving a bill that would authorize spending from a "gaming economic development fund" that gets 5 percent of the gross revenue raised each year from slot machines, spokesman Kevin Evanto said yesterday.

Onorato's prospects might hinge on fight

If Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato runs for statewide office, he might have Judge R. Stanton Wettick to thank for his political base.
The Common Pleas Court judge ruled Wednesday that Allegheny County's property assessment system, which is used in some form by every county, is unconstitutional. The case is bound for the state Supreme Court, where a ruling would affect all 67 counties, and county commissioners and state officials are lining up behind Onorato in this fight.
