Onorato announces new 78-acre county sports and athletic complex

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato this morning announced plans to build a sports complex on about 78 acres of land, including nearly a mile extension of the Montour Trail from Route 51 to the Coraopolis Bridge.
Still in the initial planning phase, the county intends to develop the property into an athletic complex with about 10 multi-purpose sports fields including rugby, soccer and lacrosse pitches.

Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato flew to Dallas on Monday for a meeting with Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly.
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. - A formerly blighted railroad yard will become a complex for nontraditional sports like lacrosse, rugby and field hockey if Allegheny County officials can raise up to $15 million for the project.
The 78-acre tract along Route 51 near the Ohio River is known as Montour Junction. A nonprofit group, the Sports Legacy Foundation, has spent about $600,000 to fix up the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad yard and has donated the land to the county.
